But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home. Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them-whether she wants to or not. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods-a powerful family in the colonies-and the servitude he’s known at their hands. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves.

She gradually wove the world through the story, and though it was a slightly slow start (as almost all of her first in a series are, as she sets up the series), it quickly picked up and I fell in love. Kristen Ashley had no problem in this area. After all, if there are magical/mythical creatures, it needs to be explained how and why they exist in our society without us knowing…or do we know? That is the thing, I think writing a good paranormal book takes so much more creativity because there is so much more mechanics to figure out. The thing with a lot of paranormal books that can make them hard to get into is world building. So I saved all of her paranormals for when I’m in a book slump and need something totally different. I read her books and the world around me completely stops for days, so I have to spread them out if my family wants to actually go to school, and…well….eat. If you have read my blog for any length of time, you know my mad, ridiculous love for all things Kristen Ashley. Paranormal Romance, Romance stands alone, story continues. His work includes fine-art prints, books, lectures, and workshops. At that time he got hooked on avian photography which remains his main interest, though he is now involved with many other types of nature subjects. I had just finished The Master and Margarita when I was queuing for a coffee at my local bookshop in Bondi, Gertrude & Alice, and I saw they had the Penguin Classic edition was on sale. While I’m sure I may have read it as a child, as an adult it’s always been a book that had never quite made it to my list of reading priorities until a friend recommended it recently. The Little Prince was one of the said unread books until a fortnight ago. And yet, and yet, there are still many hundred of books I fear I may never get around to reading, unless given a particular reason to do so. I too have read my first book by an Indonesian author, and a couple of contemporary novels I’ve had my eye on for a while. I finished thirteen books in January more in the months that have since passed. Thus far, 2019 has been a good year for books: I read my first Agatha Christie, I read a Russian classic hailed by many as the best book of the twentieth century. I often wonder if I’ll ever reach a point in my reading life where I’m satisfied by the amount of books I’ve read where I can say with confidence that I’ve read the classics and the critically acclaimed that have long haunted my to-be-read pile.
